What the 2023 survey tells us
Singapore resident households spent an average of S$5,931 a month in 2023, compared with S$5,163 in 2017/18, according to the Singapore Department of Statistics Household Expenditure Survey 2023. Average monthly expenditure grew by 2.8% a year over that period.
This is historical survey data, not a live estimate of 2026 prices. Spending growth is not the same measure as inflation. Household size, housing, age and care responsibilities can make your own spending very different.
Build your own comparison
- Track a full month of actual expenses.
- Separate recurring commitments from variable spending.
- Account for annual or irregular bills.
- Compare like-for-like categories and household circumstances.
- Set a plan using your available income and priorities.
Allow for unexpected costs
MoneySense's Basic Financial Planning Guide uses three to six months of expenses as a rule of thumb for an emergency fund. Your needs may differ. Begin by understanding your normal spending before choosing a buffer.
